Architecture (AIfIA) The AIfIA is a non-profit volunteer organization
dedicated to advancing and promoting information architecture.
Association of Internet
Professionals (AIP) The AIP exists to unify, support and represent the
global community of Internet professionals. The organization also serves as a
forum for the ideas, people and issues shaping the future of the Internet industry.
American Institute of Graphic
Arts (AIGA) Of special interest is the Experience
Design SIG focused on the Experience Design Community of Practice.
American Society for Information
Science and Technology (ASIST) Since 1937, the American Society for Information
Science and Technology (ASIST) has been the society for information professionals
leading the search for new and better theories, techniques, and technologies to
improve access to information.
Design Council
(UK) The Design Council makes sure people in business, education and government
know how effective design can transform what they do - and it gives those people
the knowledge and tools they need to turn design from an inspiring idea into something
they can use. It's purpose is to inspire and enable the best use of design by
the UK, in the world context, to improve prosperity and well-being.
Design Institute (University
of Minnesota) Directed by Janet Abrams, this organization promises to take
Design to the masses. Mission: The Design Institute develops advanced research,
educational programs and interdisciplinary partnerships to improve design in the
public realm.
Design Management Institute
(DMI) DMI is an education and research institute dedicated to demonstrating
the strategic role of design in business and to improving the management and utilization
of design.
Interaction
Design Group (IxDG) The Interaction Design Group is an international community
of people who are practicing, teaching, and studying interaction design.
Society for Environmental Graphic
Design (SEGD) SEGD is an international non-profit educational organization
providing resources for design specialists in the field of environmental graphic
design, architecture, and landscape, interior, and industrial design. SEGD members
are leading designers of directional and attraction sign systems, destination
graphics, identity programs, exhibits, and themed environments. Environmental
Graphic Design embraces many design disciplines including graphic, architectural,
interior, landscape, and industrial design, all concerned with the visual aspects
of wayfinding, communicating identity and information, and shaping the idea of
place.
Society for Technical Communication
(STC) STC is an individual membership organization dedicated to advancing
the arts and sciences of technical communication - it is the largest organization
of its type in the world. Its 25,000 members include technical writers, editors,
graphic designers, videographers, multimedia artists, Web and Intranet page information
designers, translators and others whose work involves making technical information
available to those who need it. Of particular interest is the SIG for Information
Design.
Icograda (International
Council of Graphic Design Associations) Icograda is the professional world
body for graphic design and visual communication. Founded in London in 1963, it
is a voluntary coming together of associations concerned with graphic design,
design management, design promotion, and design education. Icograda promotes graphic
designers' vital role in society and commerce. Icograda unifies the voice of graphic
designers and visual communication designers worldwide.
International Institute for
Information Design (IIID) The main concern of IIID is to contribute to
a better understanding within the human community with respect to cultural and
economic issues by means of improved visual communication. Special attention is
paid to the potential of graphic information design to overcome both social and
language barriers.
Usability Professionals
Association (UPA) The Usability Professionals' Association was formed
to: 1. Provide a network and opportunities through which usability professionals
can communicate and share information about skills and skill development, methodology
used and/or proposed in the profession, tools, technology, and organizational
issues. 2. Present the viewpoints of the profession to the public and other
interested parties. 3. Educate the general public and others on the usefulness
of the profession. 4. Represent the profession before governmental bodies
and agencies. 5. Provide the methods and means to increase the members' knowledge
of the profession through seminars, newsletters, magazines, and other communication
tools, and through meetings and conventions. 6. Serve the best interests
of the usability profession.
World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C) The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies
(specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full
potential. W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective
understanding.
