Soft Skills for Information Architecture

While process, skills and other hard skills are given much more attention in our fledgling literature, the softer skills can often make or break a project or a career for that matter. Jeff Lash takes a good hard look at these soft skills in his recent Digital Web Magazine IAnything Goes piece.

Interaction Design Exploratory Group

I wanted to invite you to participate in an important discussion regarding a future home for professionals practicing in the area of interaction design. There are many of us out there that find our center of gravity is in this area yet no organization or group adequately provides us with a home. To that end we’re looking for a home. The answer may be working within an existing organization, starting a new one or perhaps something yet unknown to us all. This is an important discussion. At the writing of this email we have almost 700 subscribers. I hope you’ll weigh in.

I hope you’ll take 1-2 minutes to participate in a very brief survey on regarding the above.

After you’re finished please consider joining the email discussion list to further voice your thoughts and opinions.

Vision Chip Looking Good

Researchers have built a silicon retina that uses a timing signal to mimic a form of data compression performed by biological eyes and transmits high-speed optical rather than electrical output. The silicon retina could be used to give small robots a better understanding of their visual environment and in smart sensors and remote monitoring cameras.

About, With and For Conference Registration has begun!

About, With and For
October 17-18, 2003
Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology
Chicago, Illinois
www.aboutwithandfor.com

The IIT Institute of Design’s annual student-run conference is just around the corner. This years AWF will discuss strategies for synthesizing research in order to bridge the gap between problem and solution. Based on comments and suggestions offered by attendees of last year’s event, we’ve made some changes to the conference structure, and built in more opportunities for participants to engage in dialogue about how differing professions practicing user research can compliment and support one another in achieving their goals.

NOTE: Space in the Friday, October 17 evening hands-on workshop will be limited to 50 participants on a first-come, first-served basis, so register early to reserve a spot.

Moving is Hell

Moving a family of five is not the most pleasurable way to spend the the last weeks of summer. Fighting with your ISP over the month + long process of shutting down and restarting DSL at the new home is even less desirable. Crashing your machine while installing the ISP’s dialup software simply defies description. No amount of excuses can convince me that the process needs to take this long or be this difficult.

If you’re waiting for a response from me please be patient. I’m catching up when and where I can.
