24 Jan 03 Fast Company Asks: What Should I Do With My Life?

“Instead of focusing on what’s next, let’s get back to what’s first. The previous era of business was defined by the question, Where’s the opportunity? I’m convinced that business success in the future starts with the question, What should I do with my life? Yes, that’s right. The most obvious and universal question on our plates as human beings is the most urgent and pragmatic approach to sustainable success in our organizations. People don’t succeed by migrating to a “hot” industry ( one word: dotcom ) or by adopting a particular career-guiding mantra ( remember “horizontal careers”? ). They thrive by focusing on the question of who they really are — and connecting that to work that they truly love ( and, in so doing, unleashing a productive and creative power that they never imagined ). Companies don’t grow because they represent a particular sector or adopt the latest management approach. They win because they engage the hearts and minds of individuals who are dedicated to answering that life question.” (article)

23 Jan 03 Does SBC Own the Rights to Web Tab Navigation?

Based on a patent(s) that seem to originate from Ameritech, SBC appears to be seeking royalties from Websites which use navigation tabs within a separate frame. A small web site, museumtour.com, has posted the notice and related documents on their site.

“Our website, www.museumtour.com, has recently received an patent infringement notice from SBC Intellectual Property. The letter suggests that any website which has static, linked information (top banners, menus, bottom banners) which are displayed while other sections of the page are displayed as non-static (the area where products appear on most websites) infringes upon the patents they hold.”

If I understand this correctly, it looks like Amazon.com is going to owe some hefty royalty/licensing fees. This should really prove to be a good brand building and public relations campaign for SBC.

22 Jan 03 The Year the Music Died

Not long before his sudden death from a heart attack, I saw Timothy White at a party in Boston, standing by the bar in his usual bow tie and white bucks. When he waved me over, I was delighted: Timothy was not only the editor of Billboard but a respected music critic and biographer. Even the executives he often took to task conceded, with a wince, that he understood the secretive, confusing business better than almost anyone. “How much you want to bet that the entire music industry collapses?” he asked me. “And I mean soon – like five, ten years. Kaboom!”
